Sandi Thom
What If I'm Right - cd2
CD-S: RCA/Viking Legacy 82876893662; 2006 (UK)

One for the "strange credits" file... although British singer Sandi Thom's short non-album cover of Don't Think Twice is performed entirely in English, the track is credited to "Dylan/Delanoe/Aufray" of the common French tranlsation!

NEW! Magazine CDs page

I have created a new separate page for Magazine CDs in Dylan Cover Albums, including the Les Inrockuptibles présentent Bob Dylan Revisited mentioned a few posts ago.
These cover-mount (or otherwise distributed with periodicals) CDs are only available for a short time while their respective magazine issues are on newsstands, so in that respect they differ from regular release collections.
Initially, there are 7 CDs listed. In addition to those moved from other Various Artists pages, one CD (Tracks Inspired by Bob Dylan) was moved from the Near-Misses section.
The new page is still part of the Various Artists section, but sorted by issue date of the various magazines instead of by title. To access, go to the Dylan Cover Albums main page, click VARIOUS ARTISTS, then click the new MAGAZINE CDs button.
Some referring links from the DataBase still point to the old locations, these will be corrected after the next update on 10/1.

From the DylanCover.com collection:
Martin Yarbrough

Blowin' In The Wind
(2:37)
Martin Yarbrough
The Martin Yarbrough Showcase
LP: Argo LP-4029; 1963 (US)

Farewell
(4:43)
Martin Yarbrough
Mixed Moods
LP: Argo LP-4043; rec.9/64 (US)

Martin Yarbrough (not to be confused with Glenn Yarbrough of the Limeliters) was a sadly overlooked folksinger from Chicago, who began as a jazz percussionist before he picked up a guitar and started singing folksongs in 1957.
Blowin' In The Wind is as good as any of the early covers of the song, and I consider Martin's Farewell to be one of the best versions, indeed it is high on my list of all Dylan covers. Hope you like it as much as I do.
To my knowledge, these recordings have not been issued on CD. Argo was the subsidiary jazz & folk music label of the legendary Chess Records.

Busy weekend...

It had been a slow month for additions to the Dylan Covers DataBase, but over the last few days I've received many new submissions. Visit the Next Update Preview to see the 121 new additions in-line for the next DataBase update on October 1.
It's unlikely (though not impossible) the DataBase will pass 20K by 10/1, but next month for sure!

Burnside Exploration

Knockin' On Heaven's Door (4:21)
Burnside Exploration
“The Record”
CD: Lucky 13 Records BCC 1333-2; 2006 (US)

I'm always relieved when any new cover of Knockin' isn't a Guns N' Roses "cover"! Thankfully this bluesy version isn't, it's closer to Bob's original with some nice guitar work.
Burnside Exploration is
Garry Burnside, the youngest son of the late bluesman R.L. Burnside, and Cedric Burnside, Garry's nephew and R.L.'s grandson.
R.L. covered
Everything Is Broken on the House of Blues various artist CD Tangled Up In Blues.

Downloads & streams

Two unreleased live covers by The Keith Jarrett Trio are temporarily available as mp3s from BigO. These 1969 live in Denmark recordings of My Back Pages and Lay Lady Lay are by a different trio than Jarrett's released versions. Unfortunately neither the recordings or performance are best quality.
The recordings are also available via bittorrent from dimeadozen.org (free membership required)

A mp3 of Don't Think Twice by Indianapolis singer-songwriter Justin Branam is available at Musical Family Tree.

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue by Boston area singer-songwriter Sean Bonnell is available for download or listening on his music page at soundclick.com.

Donavon Frankenreiter

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright (3:27)
Donavon Frankenreiter
Recycled Recipes
CD-EP: Lost Highway B0009515-02; 2007 (US)

This 6-track EP of covers is well worth a listen, with acoustic versions of Bruce Cockburn's Wondering Where The Lions Are, Wilco's Theologians, Dr. John's Such A Night, CCR's Fortunate Son, The Band's It Make's No Difference and closing with
Don't Think Twice
.
The EP was released only at indie music shops in the US, but at all outlets elsewhere, so it's easy to find as an import in the US.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: D.O.A.

Masters Of War (4:30)
D.O.A.
Live Free Or Die
CD: Sudden Death Records SDR-0056; 2004 (Canada)

If any Dylan song can withstand a punk treatment, Masters Of War might be it, though long-standing Vancouver punk band D.O.A.'s version is
closer to heavy-metal than punk, to my ears.
Masters is also a bonus track on the 2005 CD reissue of their 1982 EP War on 45
.
