New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Trials and Tribulations

Please Mrs. Henry (2:55)
Open The Door, Homer (3:14)
Trials and Tribulations
Trials and Tribulations
CD: Vanguard VSD-6565; 1970 (US)

I don't know much about Trials and Tribulations, the band. The common phrase name makes it difficult to search for.
The LP jacket lists the members - Sonny Wilf, Jim Harvey, John Wilf, Gene Fuchs - and the recording credits - produced by Bob Scherl, recorded at Sound Factory, Hollywood California - but there is no biographical or additional information. There are 2 covers besides the Dylan songs: Robbie Robertson's pre-The Band Stones That I Throw and Bobby Darin's Simple Song Of Freedom. The other 8 songs are originals written by John & Sonny Wilf, with Jim Harvey co-credited on one track.
The 2 Basement Tapes songs were released on a single, promo copies with the stereo/mono versions of Please Mrs. Henry are more common than the stock 45 with both songs.
The LP is typical 1970-era California folk-rock. Please Mrs. Henry leads off side-1 and Open The Door, Homer opens side-2.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: 3 a.m.

To Make You Feel My Love (4:02)
3 a.m.
Country Hits Dance Party
(various artists)
CD: Priority P2 51122; 1998 (US)

Here's a recipe for disaster:
Take a country version of one of Dylan's weaker songs (lyrically) and create a dance-mix version (my least favorite genre of Dylan covers.)
If you're waiting for me to say "but in this case it works," I can't. This is truly horrible. Avoid at all costs!
The subtitle is "Dance Mixes of Today's Country Hits." The only info I could find about 3 a.m. described them as a Canadian dance outfit. I don't recognize any of the other performers on the CD, but I know little of the dance music genre.
Available (if you dare) from amazon.com

Happy Holidays
+ a new Collector's Guide

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.
My mailing list is in disarray, so this will suffice as my Holiday greeting this year. Hopefully most of the long-time users of DylanCover.com still visit here occasionally.

Just in time for the season, I've added a Collector's Guide to Dylan Covers on Holiday Records.
Only 7 items to start, suggestions for additions always welcome.

From the DylanCover.com collection:
Bonus Tracks

The three groups represented here each released a full album of Dylan covers, but these tracks do not appear on those albums.
So, if you're transferring your vinyl Dylan Cover Albums to CDR, you can add these as "Bonus Tracks"!

Blowin' In The Wind (3:13)
instrumental

The Metropolitan Pops Orchestra

Plays Instrumental Versions of Peter, Paul & Mary Favorites
LP: Metro MS-596; 1967 (US)

Produced by Alan Lorber, this album is just one catalog number before their Plays Instrumental Versions of Bob Dylan Favorites.

Just Like A Woman (3:47)
Hugo Montenegro
Colours of Love
LP: RCA LSP-4273; 1970 (US)

Hugo Montenegro's choral music Dawn Of Dylan appeared the same year as this album, perhaps Just Like A Woman was an outtake from, or inspiration for, the Dylan sessions? The 2 LPs were on different labels, so I'm not sure which came first.
Hugo recorded many albums of course, including at least one other artist tribute album, the cleverly titled "Neil's Diamonds." (Yes, I have a copy.)

Don't Think Twice (2:54)
instrumental

The Sound Symposium
Contemporary Composers Interpreted
LP: Dot DLP25909; 1969 (US)

This LP was released a few months earlier in 1969 than Bob Dylan Interpreted. The Sound Symposium had previously released a similar tribute to Paul Simon (I don't have it,) his America also appears on this LP.

Long-time users of DylanCover.com with good memories may remember the theme of this post from the Monthly Features section that appeared on Dylan Cover Albums from 2000-2006. The 2 instrumental albums here were the May 2001 Feature.
You can peruse the old features & hopefully find something interesting in the Features Archive.

From the DylanCover.com collection:
Discotheque

Mr. Tambourine Man (2:45)
Discotheque
The Discotheque Dance Album
LP: Command RS 892 SD; 1966 (US)

The LPs on Command are sought after by "lounge music" collectors. This 1966 Discotheque LP is sometimes confused with the earlier Discotheque LPs by Enoch Light, but this LP is from the period after he had left the label.
The LP features many of the other headliners of Command, including Tony Mottola, Dick Hyman, Doc Severinsen, Bob Haggart and an All-Star Orchestra directed by Bobby Byrne. Only Mottola, Hyman & Byrne are mentioned in the notes regarding Mr. Tambourine Man:
“One of Bob Dylan's first ventures into folk-rock, popularized by The Byrds, retains a lot of it's essentially folkish feeling even in Bobby Byrne's full-bodied arrangement. This feeling is quickly established by the subdued cathedral tones of Dick Hyman's organ with the brass building gradually behind him and it is carried on by Tony Mottola's guitar solo. The full power of the band is unleashed as the tune progresses, working up a tremendous head of steam out of which Hyman's organ moves, high and mournful with wriggling little tremolo figures.”
It's unclear if "Discotheque" is meant to be the band name, or just an umbrella name for the project, but I've used it here in lieu of a proper band name.
Tony Mottola and Dick Hyman have been featured on the Blog before, both for their own instrumental covers
of Lay Lady Lay

Amazon MP3

Amazon MP3 offers Earth's biggest selection of a la carte, DRM-free MP3 music downloads. With over 2 million songs from more than 180,000 artists represented by over 20,000 major and independent labels.

Included in this selection, besides many of the well-known Dylan covers & cover albums, are many surprises, including Gene Norman Group's Dylan Jazz that has not been released on CD, and other obscurities like Masters Of War by The Bergerfolk and Talkin' World War III Blues by Bob Dylan Imitator Contest Winner #26 from The CooP - Fast Folk Musical Magazine.
The next DataBase update will include direct links to many available mp3s. Amazon mp3s are in high quality 256 kbs format, and are 89¢ or 99¢ for individual tracks, complete albums are also available for even less per track.

Please consider using the Amazon mp3 banner in the right sidebar of this page when buying mp3s from Amazon. Entering Amazon mp3 from this banner or other links throughout the sites helps support DylanCover.com at no additional cost to you.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Natalie Rose LeBrecht

K.O.H.D. (4:44)
Natalie Rose LeBrecht
Imagining Weather
CD: Unlabeled 004; 2005 (US)

The CD descibes K.O.H.D. as "a lyrical adaptation of Bob Dylan's Knockin' On Heaven's Door."
Apparently this means intoning a few lines of Knockin' in a monotonous voice over equally monotonous new music. One to avoid unless you must have everything.
LeBrecht is a member of the NY band Greenpot Bluepot.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Soup

Tangled Up In Blue (8:29)
Soup

A Tour of 2 Cities
CD: Phoenix Presents 3003; 2000 (US)

Jam band Soup
utilizes double male vocals on Tangled Up In Blue. I'm not a great fan of jam bands, but this version is among the better examples I've heard.
This double-CD presents two 1999 concerts, one in their hometown of Atlanta and one in New York City, but the 2 "encore" tracks on the NYC disc are from two further shows the same year at the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia, including Tangled from September 25, 1999.

Check amazon.com for used copies and more info.

From the DylanCover.com collection: Rod Ruby

Blowin' In The Wind (2:54)
Rod Ruby

Sings Your Requests
LP: Lemco 790138; 19?? (US)

The notes on this album provide all I know of Rod Ruby.
"Born in a small town in eastern Kentucky... millions watched and listened as he sang with Fred Waring... still others saw him during his early days on the Ed Sullivan Show as well as an appearance with Jackie Gleason on his network televison extranaganza.. Rod is in great demand as an after dinner speaker/singer/entertainer on the banquet circuit... he has sung with the Palm Beach and Miami Opera Companies... Rod is a big man with a big baritone voice..." You get the idea. Two other LPs by Rod are shown on the album, released by Music Associates, Inc. of Lexington, Kentucky. No date is listed, I would guess mid to late '60s. Blowin' In The Wind is the only then-contemporary song on the album. Other selections include Edelweiss, Some Enchanted Evening, Danny Boy, Battle Hymn of The Republic, and Ol' Man River.

DataBase reaches 20,000 !!!

The Dylan Covers DataBase has reached 20,000 covers listed!

My master database is actually 41 past that mark. It's a lot of work to do a full update, and it's only been 3 days since the last one, so I just added the 23 needed to reach 20K. The next full update will be on the regular first-of-month schedule. You can always see all the pending additions on the Next Update Preview page.
Note that the on-line DataBase currently contains over 20,317 lines, but 317 of these are cross-reference links or other notations.

As always, many thanks to contributors around the world who keep me informed of Dylan covers both new and old.

Thanks also to those who contribute cover scans or missing info. Over 50% of the 20K entries are illustrated. A further 40% of the listings are items where artwork is not applicable, so less than 10% of the complete DataBase is missing cover images.
Images are displayed on the detail view of each item, click the artist name on any line marked "+" in the list view to access the detail view.

Any additions, comments, suggestions or questions? You can either e-mail me (link at top of right sidebar), leave a comment to any post in the Blog in Plain D (link below post), or consider joining the fledgling Dylan Covers Forum.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Dr. Watson Reid and Americana

Man Gave Names To All The Animals (5:04)
Dr. Watson Reid
and Americana

Sing Me A Song:
The Songs to Share Series Vol.1

CD: Walden Green Music WGM 0003; 1997 (US)

This collection of classic, mostly animal-related songs is "for kids of all ages." The 8-piece band from New England and the arrangements give the album a fuller, more adult sound than one would expect on a collection of children's music. The 15 track CD includes Old MacDonald, Rock Island Line, Stewball, Camptown Races, This Old Man and others, closing with
Man Gave Names To All The Animals.
Check amazon.com for used copies and more info.

Watson Reid covered Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat on his 1996 non-children's album New Dimension, also available from amazon.com.
