New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Chandler Travis

Spanish Harlem Incident
Chandler Travis
writer-songsinger
CD: Sonic Trout ST2859-2; 1992 (US)

Chandler Travis is a singer-songwriter from Cape Cod, Massachusetts whose work mixes music with humor, first with the bands Travis Shook and the Club Wow (who spent several years in the '70s-early '80s as the opening act for George Carlin) and the Incredible Casuals, and later his solo albums beginning with his 1992 solo debut writer-songsinger, released by the Cape Cod indie Sonic Trout. His cover of Spanish Harlem Incident seems out of place among the weirdness, but it's a good version accompanied by acoustic guitar and mandolin.

Gerry Murphy, R.I.P.

I am sad to report the passing of Gerry Murphy, the "Scottish Dylan." I never met Gerry in person, but my correspondence with him was always pleasant when adding his Gerry Murphy sings Bob Dylan albums to Dylan Cover Albums.
Gerry passed away recently from a cancer related illness.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Mike Harrison

I'll Keep It With Mine
Mike Harrison
Rainbow Rider
LP: Island ILPS 9359; 1975 (US release)

Mike Harrison was a founding member of Spooky Tooth. He recorded a trio of solo albums in the '70s, the last of these was Rainbow Rider with it's cover of I'll Keep It With Mine. Shown here is the US LP, the UK release had different artwork. This track was included on the rare Copy Cats 1991 compilation on Line Records, withdrawn shortly after release due to legal issues.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Shirley Jacobs

Die antwort weiss ganz allein der wind (Blowin' In The Wind)
Tomorrow Is A Long Time
Mr. Tambourine Man
Shirley Jacobs
Endless Highways
LP: Crest CRT-12-SLP-018; 1967 (Australia)

More covers from Australia, a rare 1967 album by folk singer Shirley Jacobs. Besides the 3 Dylan songs, the album is a collection of Irish, Scottish, and French-Canadian ballads, Yiddish & Hebrew lullabies, House Of The Rising Sun, and other international folk songs. Oddly, the other tracks include short comments but the Dylan songs only show his name, except for the "translation by Bradtke" for Blowin' In The Wind that is sung partially in German, the last verse is English. Tomorrow Is A Long Time and Mr. Tambourine Man are nice, standard folk arrangements.
Shirley Jacobs also included Blowin' In The Wind on her 1975 album Songs of Love & Freedom. I don't know if it is a different recording, or possibly an all-English version. Further info about that LP would be appreciated.

New Byrds box - no new Dylan covers

Thanks to all who have sent me info about the new Byrds boxset There is A Season, but as far as I know there are no previously unreleased Dylan covers. In addition to the usual regular album tracks, Mr. Tambourine Man from the rare Banjoman soundtrack is included, and the alternate Lay Lady Lay from the now out-of-print first Byrds boxset.
The Dylan cover videos included on the DVD are lip-synch versions from various TV appearances.

Another Joe Kane / Joe Caine cassette

I have added a scan and info of another version of the cassette by Sound Alike Music, this one is Joe Kane Sings a SAM Tribute to Bob Dylan, to Dylan Cover Albums. The 1974 tape has the same catalog number as the previous U.S. cassette that does not list a performer, and the 8-Track tape that credits "Joe Caine." I have listed all these U.S. versions in Vocals under "Joe Caine."
I have also moved the uncredited Spanish cassette versions to this page (previously listed in Various Artists.)
Thanks to H.P. Bushoff for the scan & info

Blowin' In the Wind/Reggae Rocks Euro CD

I have added a scan and info of the European release of Blowin' In the Wind: A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan to Dylan Cover Albums. The 2003 "Made in the E.U." release by Eurotrend has a different track sequence than the 2002 North American release by Madacy, and the title print on the cover is slightly larger.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for the scan & info

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Marco de Koster

To Be Alone With You
One Too Many Mornings
Marco de Koster
You've Got Gold
CD-EP: DK Records DK001; 1997 (Australia)

Marco de Koster's website has all the info about this CD, a streaming audio interview, a sample of To Be Alone With You, and a link to his jewelry business. This Aussie 5-track EP was recorded at Joe Camilleri's Woodstock Studios in Melbourne, the studio that recorded The Woodtock Sessions album of Dylan covers by Australian artists the following year. Perhaps these tracks were originally intended for that collection. Camilleri, who contributed a track to that project, produced this EP and plays several instruments. The other 3 tracks are You've Got Gold written by John Prine, Lies, Lies by J.J. Cale, and Old Shoes by Tom Waits. The 2 Dylan covers are 3:19 & 3:18.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Erik

One Too Many Mornings b/w She Belongs To Me
Erik
single
45: General international 350; 1966 (US)

I don't have any bio information about Erik, but this double Dylan cover 45 was produced by Alan Lorber, of "Bosstown sound" fame and the man behind the Metropolitan Pops Orchestra LP (see Sept.21 post.)
She Belongs To Me (the B-side) is a typical mid-60s folk-rocker, Byrd-ish with the requisite jingle-jangle guitars. One Too Many Mornings has a much more lush, pop sound, with strings and orchestral backing. If you listen closely, I believe it is parts of the Metro Pops/Alan Lorber Orchestra track with vocal and guitar added! For his part, "Erik" was surely hired due to his nasal vocal style, not a soundalike but Dylan-ish.

NEW Dylan Cover Album: Million Dollar Bash

A new Dylan Cover Album has been released by Home Tone Records of Missouri. Million Dollar Bash: Missouri salutes Bob Dylan is a 2-CD, 38 track collection of Dylan songs performed by mostly unknown artists and bands from the "show-me" state of Missouri. The full track and artist list is now available on Dylan Cover Albums. A few surprises, but mostly well known Bob songs. Oddly, there is no rendition of Million Dollar Bash! There is only one artist with 2 tracks - the blugrass band Ironweed does Nashville Skyline Rag and Wallflower.
The label's website is still under construction and offers little detail other than a short description: "38-track double disc of regional Missouri artists covering Bob Dylan songs in their own style and flavor."
The CD itself does not offer much more information. Each track credits the musicians, but there is no biographical info provided. Most of the tracks were recorded during Spring 2006 at Bridge Studio, Jamestown Missouri.
I just received a copy today and haven't listened to it yet.
Available from: CD Baby
Thanks to Dirk Krah for the tip about this one.
